Fledgling Friday: MFK

Time for a look at another comic under 75 pages (that cut-off feels right).

This time we take a glimpse at MFK, by Nilah Magruder.

2012-04-16-Chapter-1-Splash

“In a world of sleeping gods, a broken government, and a fragile peace held in the hands of the corrupt, one youth must find the strength to stand up against evil and save humanity.

This story is not about that youth.

It’s about Abbie, who just wants to get to the mountain range called the Potter’s Spine, scatter her mother’s ashes, and then live out her life in sweet, blissful solitude.  Unfortunately, everyone she meets wants to either whine at her about their woes, tag along on her quest, arrest her for no reason, or blow her to bits.

Journeys are hard on the social recluses of the world.”

– From the About page

MFK showcases an immersing, vaguely post-apocalyptic world of harsh sand and harsher realities. The art is just right, detailed but not overdone, and despite the warm colors commonly affiliated with deserts, there is still a rich balance of purples, blues, and greens to make an eye-catching contrast.

The characters are just as colorful as the landscape and their interactions are equal parts funny, dramatic, and enigmatic. I like dorky, kindhearted Jaime, his gruff grandpa and jaded aunt, and just how uncomfortable the mysterious nomad Abbie seems to be around people.

Some of the conflicts and mechanics of this world have been illustrated and the groundwork for later conflicts has been laid. All in all, a fun, captivating series that I’m keen to see continued.

Ahhh thank you for reviewing MFK! You said such lovely things, I’m quite flattered. I love that you’re showcasing webcomics, especially the young ones. A few nice words now and then go a long way – and going through your archive has given me a few titles to check out! Thanks again. 😀
